What's the deal with Stranger Things?
Stranger Things (2016-2025) is a Netflix original show created by The Duffer Brothers. The show first aired its original eight episodes on July 15th, 2016. Not long after its inital release, it began to grow rapidly in popularity, earning it another season. Season two aired on October 27th, 2017. Then season three came (along with an immense amount of hype and promotion) nearly two years later on July 4th, 2019. Finally, season four aired in two parts: the first releasing on May 27th, 2022 and the second on July 1st, 2022.
What is this show about? It's the 1980s in the small town of Hawkins, Indiana, where nothing ever happens. Except, this is a TV show, so plenty of things are happening! In the first eight minutes of the show, we are introduced to a threat to this quiet town—what would be later dubbed The Upside Down. This alternate world is unleashed into Hawkins, through a gate in Hawkins Laboratory, and a certain monster, "The Demogorgon", begins to terrorize Hawkins.
Will Byers—one of the nerdy kids and friend of Mike Wheeler, Lucas Sinclair, and Dustin Henderson—is abducted in the opening sequence and then subsequently trapped in the Upside Down. Over the course of the first season, the ensemble cast would have to work their way, unraveling the mystery that is this alternate dimension, with the added mystery of a girl with telekenetic powers—Eleven.
I won't say much more on the show here, because I'll keep my season synopses in their respective pages, but that's essentially the gist. The show is known for its 1980's nostalgia, its horror and drama and sci-fi, and for its iconic cast of characters.
